Time to Display

Wow. What a week. First, my mother-in-law, Dee, is doing great. Her surgery went well and now only 4 days later, she's up walking around. Thanks to everyone for their kind thoughts and prayers.

The class crit was wonderful. It was great to give and get input on our project before we get to the final. It was also great to see people defend their ideas. Just because someone makes a comment or suggestion, we are the designers, and if our rationale is sound, it is our responsibility to share it. Especially later when working with clients, we need to be able to educate them, and not cave just because they may have their own ideas. Clients hire designers for our expertise, and it's our job to make our clients successful, not just satisfied. Our goal should always be to give them something better than they could imagine.

Okay, I'll get off my soap box and get back to my project. The class crit was a great relief for me because I was getting too obsessed with making a real product and forgetting that it is a model. I am having so much fun exploring tools and materials that I lost sight of the goal, which is to communicate my idea, and not create an art piece.

I started out just playing with shapes.

Next, I tried a couple actual study models.
Then something just a bit more refined to study the scale.

At a scale of 3" = 1', I think will communicate well. If it were actual size, the figure would be an imposing 6' tall.

  1. You have a wide variety of shapes. You are very adventuresome, as for me I can be so tentative. I believe you chose a strong image, shape and colors to begin with your burly guy. It looks like there are many directions in which you can go.

  2. Love the shapes! Each idea is different, but you've got several awesome paths you can take. The multi-dimensional triangle looks like you could create multiple anime men, but at a smaller scale. Where would the pens go - on the opposite sides?

Also, thank you for getting on the soap box - I needed that (really!). Once I am able to summarize my vision for this project, I will definitely need to take note of the points that helped me get there so that I can defend my design better.

  3. looks like you're an inspiration to others - just the way you are with your classmates! "soap box talk" - good stuff. i'm very glad to see that you are learning the other side of a crit - the part where you "defend" your work. this is so important - so many ideas will be offered...if the idea doesn't support what you're doing...it's fourth and twelve (it's time to punt). great work, rose.

  4. Rose! I just got done doing paper mache and I am so glad you happened to mention that you were putting your parts in the oven to dry! It worked like magic...You're my hero!
