Wow. Desk critique yesterday shot down my balloon. Remember my product is a Parker Jotter pen, and my target audience is a demographic of young people age 10 - 25 (depending on maturity). So below are my ideas, based on the Dragon Ball Z anime theme. One step beyond the current boring pitch to a younger demographic includes the Goku character.
Next idea was to associate the Dragon Balls with the pen. Buy the pen, get a ball and collect all 7.

In the anime (movie, tv series, web, game, etc.) if you collect all 7 balls, your wish will be granted. So my idea was to associate the pen with collecting all seven balls.
The concept was good, but it seemed to be more about the ball rather than the pen.
My next idea was more directly related to the pen. The pen would be attached to small simple sketchbook. Inside the book would be some tips on how to draw manga or anime, then blank pages to practice drawing manga/anime.
Professor Anderson also thougth this was more about the book rather than the pen. She mentioned tiny sushi erasers and key chains, so I said, "How about action figures with the pen in their backpacks. The action figures would double as pen holders."
PROCEED TO THE NEXT LEVEL.
No Dragon Ball action figures. None, zip, nada. None to be had.
:-( bummer.Okay, regroup. Another sponsor: Magic Beans. You can collect 60. They cover the gambit: Star Wars, Marvel Comics, Transformers, Ironman, .....

They are cute, but cost $6.00 a piece so maybe not in the real world, but we're students, so maybe...
Maybe not. The jotter pen is outdated and a bit lame. I'm having problems with a sponsor for an associated promotion. What else can I do?
Upgrade the product? Give the Jotter a makeover? I found a pen that has a LED flashlight and a laser pointer. Cool. The packaging is crying for a makeover.

Halo Reach just came out and it's a bit older audience than Pokeman. There are already mystery packets that could go along with the pen:

I think I'm on to something here.
Talked to Prof. Anderson--back to the Action Figure.
